It is quite complex to try and generalize the role an in house legal counsel plays in today’s demanding business context, there is but no doubt that the position is still evolving.  

In house legal counsel’s are required to give detailed advice based on a thorough understanding of how business works, so it’s very important that they’re not afraid to get out there and see how people do their jobs.

A highly regulated business will require a technically competent and compliant lawyer who in certain sectors may even require the assistance of a compliance officer.  In fast moving organisations, a commercial mind and a deft brain are more at a premium, as lawyers will need to assess risk quickly and often take a broad-brush view in order to move the business forward.

This can sometimes involve a less than lawyerly attitude to risk weighing up the business case against the likely risks in a robust and commercial fashion.  What these businesses want from an in-house lawyer is an adviser who is seen to be offering solutions – creativity and problem solving in the strategic sense are absolutely critical to the makeup of the in-house lawyer of today.
